CPU Guide: Future Cores

This page lists future processor cores that are currently expected from AMD and Intel. As it deals with expected future products, its accuracy is not certain and all materials on this page are subject to change. As with all efforts to predict the future, you would be wise to furnish your own grain of salt.

AMD

Desktop

Sparta: A cut-down Brisbane (or a die-shrunk Manila, as you like), the new value chip. Possibly single-core. Rumors are floating that there will also be a "Sempron X2" dual-core version with otherwise similar specifications. Late 2006.

K8L will find its way here; more on K8L.

Laptop

Keene: Supposed to be a Mobile Sempron based on the Taylor Turion 64 X2. A lower-cache version may appear. 2006.

AMD Keene Mobile Sempron S1 1 256 KB HTT 90 nm N/A

Tyler: Die-shrink of Turion 64 X2 Taylor. A lower-cache version may appear. Probably early 2007.

AMD Tyler Turion 64 X2 S1 2 512 KB HTT 65 nm N/A

Sherman: Mobile Sempron based on Tyler (or die-shrink of Keene, as you like). A lower-cache version may appear. Probably early 2007.

K8L will find its way here. Expect K8L laptop parts around 2 months (perhaps more; actual availability may be a good 6 months later) after the desktop parts. No specific cores, sorry. More on K8L.

Server

Deerhound: Quad-core, die-shrunk iteration of Opteron Santa Rosa. A "Revision G" part. A 12xx version for Socket AM2 or AM3 is strongly possible; it may be known as Greyhound. A big chunk of L3 cache is a distinct possibility. 2007, most likely.

AMD Deerhound Opteron F 4 1 MB HTT 65 nm N/A

Barcelona: Expected to be the first product in AMD's K8L lineup. Native quad core design, with 2 MB of shared L3 "victim" cache. Previewed here. More on K8L here. Mid-2007.

Names floating in the inter-soup include Cerebus as an Opteron 83xx/23xx and matching Wolfhound as Opteron 13xx as possible K8L Opterons.

Intel

Desktop

At least one new Core 2 Duo based on the Allendale core is expected in Q1 2007. It will have a reduced Front Side Bus (200 MHz), but otherwise be similar to existing products. Model number E4300.

Conroe-L: A single-core, cut down version of Conroe. Rumors have flown for some time that it will have a Pentium name of some sort, but there may not be anything to that.

Intel Tigerton Xeon J 4 ? ? 65 nm N/A

Dunnington: Probably a die-shrunk 8-core Tigerton. Could actually be the same product; uncertain.
